Somatic Profiles of the 2008 Yankees & Mets
As comedian Jerry Seinfeld said when it comes to beings a sports fan, in the end, we all root for the laundry. Why we do that is the real question. For the diehards, the answer is something called deep trance identification (DTI) wiki - an obscure hypnotic process that we naturally enter into developmentally when we want to shed our personality for our hero's. So for every 50-something out there with a Mickey Mantle 'mancrush' there's someone like me who had their Tom Seaver moment. For that point on, the love/hate soap opera of being a fan is woven into the fabric of your life. You take on the behaviors and alter ego's of 'your team'.
That's you. Now what about the teams themselves. Let's profile both of the local NY teams' 40-man rosters as of June 15th and see what all this talk about chemistry and body language is all about. Most popular sports profiling is based on assessing a player's skill sets. In baseball, that means the so-called 5-tools wiki of hitting for average and power, fielding, arm strength and running speed. Recent developments in sports and human performance have included a new elements like brain design and personality assessments in their scouting and player evals.
But what about their social intelligence wiki ? What makes one player thrive on pressure and others wilt and be unable to handle it? Why do some players enjoy a healthy relationship with the media and others feel persecuted and unfairly attacked? Why are some so injury prone and others never get hurt? All of these answers are function of what known is their primary domain. We all organize and internalize the signatures of one of 4 subjective orientations our brains possess as we moves through the experiences of the 1st four years of life. As we going through our early years of development, our social nervous system pdf is shifting it's focus so we can form what will eventually become our closed identity. That's process isn't complete until we enter neurological adulthood at the age of 25, a time when most MLB players are entering the peak of their careers.
In late adolescence, which is from age 17 to 25, that natural biological process is reinforced by developing a 'life story'; a so-called narrative coherence link, Players add cultural devices to feed it and you'll see all the 'markings' of their world in their on-field and off-field personas. Each generation has it's own distinct theme that permeates the group as a whole. While that's going on, players are being scouted and making their way through the minors. This is where the value of demonstrating leadership in the moment and teamwork over time is being evaluated by their coaches, managers and their peers 24/7. So they're getting it from all angles.
The 4 Domains is a somatic profiling system anyone can use to become more aware of how they intuitively assess a given situation, individual, behavior or relationship we encounter. So it's not a stretch to apply this to a 40-man roster. The beauty of somatic profiling as an art is that it's something our social nervous system does anyway, without us knowing, about once every 4 seconds or so. It's in the this window we can make eye contact with others and the world we're sharing with them in that moment and profile which if the 4 domains we're experiencing based on our physical, other-than-conscious responses. Below I've broken down both team's rosters.

Injury Update! Chien-Ming Wang Out Until September (at best) The Yankees took another hit to their weakest resource, starting pitching, when they lost Chien-Ming Wang to the dreaded Lisfranc foot sprain. But the vibe has already been changed as Giradi has excuted a clever 180 that was embedded in the Joba transition. Joe is going to rely on the old Bronx Bomber mentality and try and outslug teams and put the keep it close for 7 and get it to Joba and Mariano in the 8th and 9th on the shelf - at least for now. I still think that when the playoffs begin, Joba will be back in his set up role and the Yanks will find a way to make a trade for a quality #3 starter. Time will tell.
New York Yankees Manager: Joe Girardi - ONTO - The transition from the well-respected, even-keeled managing of Joe Torre to the fiery, almost player-coach mentality of Giradi will depend less on how well he entrains the older EXO's like Mussina and Rivera and the team leaders like ONTO Jeter and more on how he gains loyalty from the 7 PHYLO's he has, including A-Rod, Giambi and Posada. The team has pinned it's future to the new pitchers, most noteably, ONTO Joba. With Huges and Kennedy hurt and ineffective, the other 'story' of the first half has been ONTO Rasner, who's accepted his opportunity and may force Giradi to keep him around. Overall, this is a team that is driven the 8 ECO's, 4 of them whom are regulars in the lineup. Their coherence will impact how Giradi's emotional style transfers to the team in the second half. The Joba saga gets the headlines but track the ECO's.
New York Yankees Radio Voice: John Sterling - ONTO - If you haven't heard a Yankee broadcast, then you don't know what you're missing. His uberONTO voice exudes the persona of the team - regal, theatric, self-absorbed - LOL - and memorable. He makes you decide to love or hate him and in so doing, the team as well...

Team Shakeup Update! Willie, Peterson, Nieto Sent Packing In any effort to make a medicore season worse, ONTO Omar Minaya executed one of the most clumsy, transparent firings of an incumbant manager imaginable. The stammering Minaya orchestrated a Willie-ectomy in what appeared to be a reaction to what he perceived to be a hostile media atmosphere last weekend at Shea. EXO Jerry Manuel's eloquent, but hollow attempt at humor during his press conference signaled the unofficial beginning of the 'Bring Back Bobby V' Vigil, set to begin ASAP. With the EXO Manuel at the reigns, it'll be interesting to see if the abandoned PHYLO stars like Reyes, Wright and Santana withdraw from the media even more. Minaya needs to complete the autopsy and cut Delgado an Alou and remove non-contributors like El Duque from the team's plans. The ECO's are already calling their agents. Trust me.
New York Mets Manager: Willie Randolph - PHYLO Ugh...As a Met fan (full disclosure), Willie is at the helm of a ship of fools and the crew is searching for the courage it needs to weather playing 22 games out their first 74 out West. It's a team with obvious flaws and subtle talents. Being 'led' by a PHYLO like Willie, who likes to keep a stiff upper lip, has been a tedious burden for a team that is so PHYLO-heavy with stars. That kind of 'leadership by committee' wears out the ONTO's and EXO's and tunes out the ECO's who see their emotional exuberance as a condiment, not an essential ingredient. For this team to excel, it needs the EXO's to take the wheel and bypass all the media hype and anchor what is a rocky boat. I'd expect ONTO GM Omar Minaya to try to tinker with this lineup and possibly attempt a team altering trade if the Mets aren't at or above .500 by the next Subway Series later this month. That said, this team of old ECO's and star-crossed PHYLO's will have less travelling to do and that alone may be the single biggest factor in their resurgence, whether they hand the reigns to EXO Jerry Manuel or not...
New York Mets Radio Voice: Howie Rose - ONTO - Lifelong Met fan Howie took over full-time for the legendary PHYLO voice of Bob Murphy after Bob's passing in 2004. He's been a familiar presence on the broadcasts for over 15 years now - nearly as long as ONTO TV voice (as of 2007) Gary Cohen. To me, they were the best tandem on the radio, and that's not the Met fan talking. Both of them grew up in the upper deck of Shea Stadium and true to the core angst of the PHYLO-laced Met fan base, these two voices suffer and celebrate with equal competence. Howie is the 180 of Sterling. He invites you to listen, just as he would invite you to sit next to him and watch the game in person. So Howie is a more 'neurotypical' or moderate ONTO to Sterling's uber-version. His signature "put it in the books" catch phrase is countered by Sterling screeching "Yankees Win...theeeeeee Yank-ees Win" gloat are all you need to know to realize the degree of variability with a domain, especially the ONTO one where it's all about them.
YES Network - ONTO - If you turn on a Yankee broadcast, the YES networks's omnipotent self-worth almost extends from the TV screen into your living room. The channel is a microcosm of the Yankee's social identity; tradition and sense of self-annointed leadership. The team was seen as EXO from the outside, corporate and stiff. But that's a facade. This is an ONTO organization with an EXO shield, a baseball kingdom if there ever was one. That's why you have T-shirts that say Yankees Universe and the Red Sox ECO Nation calls them the Evil Empire. It fits!
SNY Network - ECO - The newly born network is taking it's cue from the Met's social identity, but it's flipping the script a bit. Unlike the Yankee-centric YES network, SNY is a media gypsie, partnering with the Daily News, WFAN radio and just about any other local programmer it can to establish itself as a NY sports channel that features the Mets. The Mets themselves are team with a PHYLO core and an ECO coating so this is a great way to blend without being so attached at the hip you undermine yourself to the casual fan. Willie already feels this ECO station is out to get him as his days in the hot seat are mounting. It'll be interesting as the Ghost Hosts of the '86 Mets loom over this team as he walks the tightrope with his muted PHYLO brood doing their best to not take the fetal position as the season unfolds. Watch how ONTO Omar works these ECO SNY sapes as the pressure increases. Ugh.
